How To Increase ADSI Edit Maximum Number of Items per Folder

with No Comments

I saw this error pop up earlier today while trying to browse a very large OU with ADSIEdit: “There are too many items in the folder <folder>. Please refine the query parameters or increase the maximum number of items per folder.”

Strangely enough, this is actually the first time I’d ever seen this error, and was a bit perturbed at first as there is no option in the GUI to increase the view. So off to Bing I went, which led me to this Microsoft KB: Controlling the Active Directory Search Buffer Size

The steps are straightforward and easy:

  1. Use Registry Editor to locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoft
  2. Add a registry key named Windows to the registry key listed above. <- This already existed on the server I was on.
  3. Add a registry key named Directory UI to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindows
    adsieditreg1
  4. Add a REG_DWORD value named QueryLimit to the registry key listed below. Type the appropriate decimal value for the limit you want to set. I increased it to 10,000.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsDirectory UI
    adsieditreg2
